Good Shepherd offers several levels of play: Pee Wee (Instructional), Slowpitch and Fastpitch. Teams are divided by age. The fastpitch teams and 10u slowpitch teams are entered into a local league run under PONY rules which is represented by each program’s softball director. Slowpitch teams above the 10u level are entered into CYO as there is no neighborhood slowpitch league. Age eligibility is determined by your age on January 1st prior to the start of the season. For example, a player that turns 11 on February 2nd would be eligible for the 10u team.

Pee Wee: Any girl in the 1st or 2nd grade.  Pee Wee is instructional.  The focus is on  teaching the fundamentals of the game (batting mechanics, proper throwing, fielding and general).  At this level of play, the girls are encouraged to explore all positions on the field. Coaches pitch as a safety precaution. Typically the season begins in April as a clinic with some games mixed in starting in May.

Slowpitch: The slowpitch team is ideal for the girl who loves to play softball or is just learning the game. The official ball is the 12″ Clincher.  Girls pitch to each other (unlike Pee Wee).  The coach can field up to 10 girls (4 outfielders) in any given inning and each girl must play at least 3 innings.  The girls learn from each other.  There is no bunting, stealing, leads or advancement on passed balls.  10u games are generally weeknights at 6pm while CYO games are usually played on weekends.  CCD schedules and other Parish events are taken into account when schedules are created.

Fastpitch: Fastpitch is more competitive and designed to get the girls ready for high school ball. National PONY softball rules apply.  The official ball is the 12″ Dudley.  Bunting, stealing, advancement on pass balls are all allowed, as is windmill pitching.  There is no guarantee of playing time,. There also may be double-headers.  Make-up games (e.g. rain outs) are scheduled according to available field times as there is in slow pitch ball.  Games are generally played weeknights at 6pm, but weekend games are a possibility. Tryouts for the fastpitch teams are held in March.
